Llanos komfortabel: Hato el Cedral
According to many travelers the savanna of Los Llanos is one of the best places in South America to nearly observe wildlife. Animals such as spectacle caiman, Orinoco crocodile, capybaras and turtles gather together in the water holes. In the dry season it is not rare to find an anaconda lying in the mud or an anteater close to sundown. If we are lucky we might even see a puma or a jaguar.
Los Llanos is also a bird paradise where you can easily see colorfull macows, parrots as well as Ibis, Sunbitter, Hoatzin, Roseate Spoobill, and lots of birds of pray. Not to mention that Howler monkeys that come for a while to have a rest on the Acacias of the camp.
1 day: Drive in the Andes
After breakfats we drive up to the Paramo, the highland of the Venezuelans Andes. On the way we stop at the famous stone chapel of Juan Felix Sanchez, an artisan and artist who received in 1995 a nomination from the Unesco. And so we continue to the Condor valley of Mifafi followed by the Eagle pass at 4200m where three meter high Espeletias grow. After that we continue to Mucubaji lake (3550m) where we hike to laguna Negra (Black lagoon) After that we have lunch. As a tip for lunch we recommend Paramo´s speciallity: trout.
After lunch the descent begins and we drive along different vegetation levels such as Paramo, cloud forest, subtropical rainforest till we reach the colonial town of Altamira.
We spend the night at the comfortable posada Casa Vieja in Altamira.
2 day: Hato el Cedral in Los Llanos
After breakfast we drive to los Llanos and arrive at Hato Cedral for lunch. This hato is a classic ranch of approx. 56000 hectares in the heart of the Llanos that operates not only as a cattle ranch, but also as a touristic destination. Animals such as caimans, Orinoco Crocodile, anteater, capybaras, turtles and leguans live protectd on the land of Hato el Cedral.
Right after lunch we leave for a safari and observe a variety of animals gathered together in the water holes, as well as hundred of different birds species (300 approx in the Hato) like Macows, Parrots, birds of pray, owls, roseate spoolbill, Ibis, Sunbitter and Hoatzin.
Even in the rainy season there are good chances to see the tamandua or the giant anteater in the Hato. Also the biggest snake of the wolrd, the anaconda can be easily discovered lying on the mud. There are groups that have found anacondas of 7m. We spend the night at Hato el Cedral.
3 day: Hato El Cedral Los Llanos and return
Early in the morning we hike in the camp while listening and watching parrots, macows and howler monkeys. After that we have breakfast and then go for a boat ride, a great opportunity to observe sweet water dolphines. The calm water of the Matiyure and Caicara stream at the Hato are the habitat of some special and rare birds like the Agami heron as well as lots of birds of pray. Caimans, krokodiles and capybaras are usually near by during the boat ride.
At noon we go back to the camp, have lunch and get ready to drive back to Mérida. For those who continue the journey into other parts in Venezuela, they might be dropped off at barinas airport or at the bus terminal.
