Fascinating Andes

Coffee, sugar cane plantations and horseback riding in the Andes

The tour Fascinating Andes offers an excellent opportunity to get to now the Andes and their original life. It is the best complementary tour to Los Llanos.

1. Day: From Jaji to the southern towns (Pueblos del Sur)

The tour starts in Merida and take us to the Panamericana road along the cloud forest of the Sierra la Culata national park.

Jaji is a small town surrounded by coffee plantations, a town that has a colonial charm. In jaji we visit the old colonial coffee hacienda Hacienda El Carmen to observe the coffee preparation and production as in old times.

Half an hour drive from Jaji we find an amazing cactus canyon where most time of the year remains arid. Nonetheless it is also a place where the sugar cane grows. A place which still keep its ancient touch like in Simon Bolivar´s times.

In the middle of cactus Canyon we find the entrance to the Pueblos del Sur. These isolated Andean towns have maintained a wonderful charm over the time. They can only be reached by jeep. After three hour drive we reach our destination: San Jose. There we spend the night.

2. Day: From San Jose to Mérida

After breakfast we drive from San José to the village of Tostos. Experienced Andean horses take us up and down the hillslope. Horseback riding experience ist not necesarily needed for this excursion. Back in San José we have lunch and after it we go back to Mérida.

The “ Los Pueblos del Sur ” is a tour that takes us to remote Andes regions where agriculture is still performed as 100 years ago.
