Moon landscape Trek in 3 days at 4600 m
Pan de Azúcar Peak in the Sierra de la Culata national park is one of the favorite trekking tours in the Venezuelan Andes.
1. Day: From La Culata to the first base camp
The trek begins in La Culata at 3.000 meters and takes approximately four hours in the Andean vallys. After crossing several streams we reach our base camp located next to a small waterfall. This is also the base of Pan de Azucar peak (Sugar bread peak) Here we pitch our tents.
2. Day: Ascent to the summit
We start early in the morning. After two to three hours trek in the mountain, we arrive to a sandy moon lansdscape resembling a moraine glacier. Usually the view up there is clear, so we can contemplate the snow covered summits of Sierra Nevada and the Maracaibo Lake of Zulia state.
After it, we descend and spend the night at Carbonera lake at approx 4000m.
3. Day: Descent to Merida
The next day we walk for approx 2 hours just to the hot spring water of the Musui.
The way back will be around 2pm and is going to take 1,5 hour (to Posada Casa Vieja)
